I've always known my family was different, but not until I talk about them do I realize how different they are. My mom is 1 of 7 kids. Farm kids that are pretty bossy, pretty independent and all Irish. I see a lot of myself in them. My dad is 1 of 3 of an English/German family where comedy and teasing is key to every loving relationship. You now see why Robert looks at me like a creature from another planet when I do things a certain way.
A great example of their strangeness is to show up unannounced. This is CLASSIC between my mom and her sister Ilene. My Aunt and Uncle have lived in Alabama since the early 80s. So my mom would announce to us kids that we would be taking the 12 hour drive from Michigan(these trips started when I was very young) to see them for our spring break (which was a week), we were so excited. We all loaded in the car and made the LONG drive together. It usually ended up with four very grouchy people ready to kill each other and get the hell out of the car. What they never mentioned to us kids or in particular to my aunt, was that we were coming at all or that we would be staying with them, in their house, for an entire week. We would arrive and drive by their house, really, really, slow and wait for them to look out the window at us. Then we would pile in and take over their pool. This went on for years.
So, I have to laugh now when my parents arrive on Friday without my Aunt Ilene and Uncle David (two people I absolutely adore). I talk to my Aunt on Friday night and she informs me that she is in fact coming to see us. I am strongly instructed not to mention it to my parents. She said that they were going to Savannah and then Myrtle and then would be here today (Wednesday) just in time for Hayden's first birthday tomorrow. This is classic and though I know my mom will be so mad at both of us for keeping the secret, it's going to be with being a part of the classic payback. I just hope that I'm there to see her face and run faster than her.
Yes, I know my family is strange, but I do love them.
