Just how bad the housing market really is hit home Wednesday after the dust settled on the auction of a residence in Saginaw, Mich.
With all of eight bids on eBay, the abandoned home went to Joanne Smith, 30, of Chicago – who, reports the Saginaw News, paid a grand total of $1.75.
"I am going to try and sell it," said Smith, who is originally from Miami and doesn't intend to leave Chicago, even to visit her new house. "I don't have any plans to move to Saginaw."
Besides shelling out her bargain price, Smith has until March 31 to pay back taxes and a bill for weed cleanup on the property. That comes to about $850.
''The people who I bought the house from, they are not giving me any information about it,'' Smith said. ''I know that the property is abandoned and that there are taxes owed on the house, but all I have is their e- mail.''
The sellers could not be reached by the Saginaw News.

McCain pulling out of Michigan
John McCain is pulling out of Michigan, according to two Republicans, a stunning move a month away from Election Day that indicates the difficulty Republicans are having in finding blue states to put in play.
McCain will go off TV in Michigan, stop dropping mail there and send most of his staff to more competitive states, including Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida. Wisconsin went for Kerry in 2004, Ohio and Florida for Bush.
McCain's campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Republicans had been bullish on Michigan, hopeful that McCain's past success in the state in the 2000 primary combined with voter dissatisfaction with Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm and skepticism among blue-collar voters about Barack Obama could make it competitive.
McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin spent the night after the GOP convention at a large rally in Macomb County, just outside Detroit. The two returned later last month for another sizable event in Grand Rapids.
But recent polls there have shown Obama extending what had been a small lead, with the economic crisis damaging an already sagging GOP brand in a state whose economy is in tatters.
A McCain event planned for next week in Plymouth, Michigan, has been canceled.

First off, I saw the article about the lady who bought the house in Saginaw. People like her are not helping cities like Saginaw or Flint at all. Instead of letting those houses go to authorities like the Land Bank, who will either rehab it or demolish it - they fall into people who have no intention whatsoever to take care of these houses - thus, in turn, perpetuating the problems these cities are having with abandoned houses and lowered house values. It inflames me how narrow-sighted they are. Doesn't she think if it was SUCH a great deal, SOMEONE would have bought it at $10 bucks? Chances are, this house needs to be demo'd - and now that it's in her hands, instead of the appropriate organizations - it's going to sit there, as a danger and an eyesore to it's community. it absolutely inflames me. Way to go Chicago-girl.
In terms of McCain - can't say I personally am disappointed - however, if I was a republican in Michigan - I think I would be very disappointed that he "gave up on us" as if we don't matter. Maybe for him, in the long run, we don't...but, to me, a resident of the state - I do. That being said...I won't miss his ads.
